Sustainability – while there are numerous definitions out there – most of them very good and very compelling – how does any company or institution figure out what technologies will provide the best value for them?
The first thing to understand is 85% of every building’s 30 year life cycle cost goes to the people in the building – hiring, training, salaries, overtime, healthcare, retirement, and other benefits, HR departments, legal departments, etc. are by far the most costly component of any building’s budget – unless it’s a mostly empty data center or satellite warehouse – the people inside are the largest part of the budget, by far.
Buying the land, building the facility, running and maintaining it for 30 years is literally just 5% to 15% of the total cost.
So, doesn’t it make sense to do everything possible to improve the productivity, safety, accuracy, learning, and health or your people? Of course it does.

Air Destratification Fans: Hot air rises and cold air sinks – that’s air stratification. Our industry leading fans are mounted within 6″ of the roof deck and are specifically designed to bring that hot stale air and send it straight down to the floor where in billows out and thoroughly mixes all the air in any space. Within minutes the difference in floor and ceiling temperature will be within 1-2 degrees and the room will be dramatically more comfortable. These air destratification fans will also improve productivity and health. These amazing fans will also save 25% or more throughout the summer and 10-15% all winter. While solar is tremendous, it does nothing for the people inside the building. Therefore, for many reasons, no flat roofed commercial building should ever put solar panels on the roof.
Every sustainability expert states, “Take care of every conservation effort first, then properly size the solar for the now greatly reduced energy bill”.
Once our four sustainable solutions are installed, put the properly sized solar over the parking lot, on the lawn, or on the south wall of the building – never on the roof.
Why? Once a roof is covered in solar, the interior can never be illuminated with abundant, fully diffused daylight all day; and the productivity benefits along with turning off all the lights all day FAR outweigh how much energy can be produced on the roof with solar.
One 16 SqFt SunTracker Skylight brings in enough light to eliminate 800W of fluorescent light and over 1,000W of HID Lighting for 8-10 hours a day.
A single solar panel is also about 16 SqFt and produces 300W (tops) for 4 hours a day (maybe). Which would you rather have in the same 16 SqFt?
