This is a new barn and farm stand at Lima Family Farms – 826 Amwell Road, Hillsborough, NJ.
I was called in by Spera Electric to design a lighting plan for Lima Family Farms using the best, most cost effective LED solutions.
First, we ordered all the LEDs at 4000K so the entire lighting package matched in color temperature!
For the large barn room, where they will store and work on equipment, we used 9 of our IP65 rated 125W LED High Bays – just 1,125 total watts for 5,200 sqft!
These were also put on 3 switches so they can turn on whatever row of lights they need, or all 9 for maximum illumination.
These provide 45 to 55 footcandles of high CRI light. And this is only .22W/SqFt., which is < 27% of the ASRAE90/IES requirement for warehouses (.80W/SqFt is the Maximum allowed). If this was done with 400W Metal Halide High Bays, (a) it would only be about 20-25 footcandles at best, and (b) use 4,122W. This is a 72.7% energy savings! With a 7 Year Warranty and a 79,000 hour rated life!
For the Retail Farm Stand and Work Room, we specified these 10 40W 4′ Linear Fixtures which are also IP65 rated (waterproof) with a 5 Year Warranty. This 1500 sqft room is illuminated with 40 to 50 footcandles of high CRI light with only 400 total watts. This is just .27W/SqFt, which is <18% of the ASREA90/IES max of 1.50W/SqFt for Retail! 10 three tube surface mount fluorescent fixtures (@ 96W each, 960W total) couldn’t provide these light levels and would require lamp and ballast maintenance and recycling. No recycling with LED! These 4′ 40W Linear Fixtures provide 58.3% energy savings.
We also used these 40W and 50W LED IP65 rated 4′ Linear Fixtures in the smaller work rooms and outside under the rear porch’s roof. Again, they’re waterproof.
Inside the small restroom, we used 2 6″ Flat Disk Downlights at just 11W each. Bright, but with no glare or harshness, perfect for this bathroom.
In the walk-in cooler, we installed a 12W, A19 lamp where a 75W or 100W lamp would’ve been typically used, with great results. 74% energy savings and better cold performance!
Outside, we used 6 80W LED Dark Sky Wallpacks, 2 on each end and 1 each over the large doors on the barn, 1 48W LED Dark Sky Wallpack over the low garage door on the back of the retail room, 1 50W LED 4′ Linear under the porch, and in the 3 Carriage Lamp Fixtures flanking the 3 doors, we used our 330 degree 8.5W A19 lamps, which you can see in the lower right picture. All with 5 Year Warranties.
The entire outside of this 8,400 SqFt barn-farmstand is illuminated using just 603.5 total watts. No Metal Halide Wallpack could ever provide these illumination levels, yet they would still use over 2,495 total watts. This equals a 75% energy savings and vastly superior illumination.
We congratulate Lima Family Farms on this barn/farm stand and wish them tremendous success.
I’ve become a patron as their garlic is the best there is, their truly free range chicken eggs are fabulous, and the fresh vegetables in season are also tremendous. Now, driving east on Amwell Road from Flemington, you’ll see their barn at night – at least until about 7 PM – if the exterior lights are on later than that, the chickens will not lay any eggs!
It’s worth stopping in to get great local farm products!
